“…let this cup pass from me, yet not my will but your will be done…” -
Matthew 26:39
What cup is Jesus talking about? As Jesus prays in the Garden of
Gethsemane, He falls to the ground and cries out, “Oh my father, if
it be possible let this cup pass from me! Nevertheless, not my will, but
Yours be done.” Why was Jesus asking for this cup to pass? Why was
He in such terror? Why was He sweating drops of blood?
It was God’s plan before the world began to send His son into the
world to take away sin. God knew the human race would fall away
and in, and death would control the destiny of the human race. Still,
He had a remedy for it. Jesus, the Son of God, had to drink the cup.
It was a spiritual cup filled up with pain, humiliation, punishment,
and the sins of humanity for all time. It was a cup overflowing with
the wrath of God. No wonder why He cried out, “If there be any other
way let this cup pass!” Jesus received no answer from the father
except, “Drink the cup, all of it!”
Beloved, can you see the plan and purpose of God in all of this? Can
you see the amazing love of God? There was no other way to satisfy
God’s righteous wrath and holiness. The cup of wrath was poured out
on Jesus! Anyone can be forgiven because God is satisfied with the
payment for the penalty of sin. That’s the full meaning of the cross of
Jesus Christ. He persevered through the cup, and as a result, we can
spend eternity with God in heaven. Anyone who believes in Jesus will
not drink a cup of wrath for all of eternity. Instead, they will drink the
cup of God’s love, mercy, and grace! Praise God!
